Twitter in election campaigns – What a difference two years can make

Last week we had general elections in the Netherlands. Below are some graphs noting the change in Twitter adoption between 2010 and 2012. What we see is that overall Twitter adoption has increased, in absolute numbers (barchart 1) and relative numbers (barchart 2). Only GroenLinks did not increase but decrease its level of Twitter adoption (see barchart 3). Even though they lost significantly in the elections, this most likely cannot be attributed to the relative lack of Twitter adoption. CDA more than doubled their Twitter adoption (see barchart 2), but lost enormously anyhow.
What is surprising is that even the parties that already scored highest in 2010 (PvdA, VVD, D66 in second barchart) increased their Twitter adoption. (Note: only parties that participated in both elections are listed).
